Tuesday, February 16, is Elizabeth Peratrovich Day. Recognize the name? We didn’t until one night last fall when the Anchorage TV station was covering the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention and they highlighted the special screening of the film “For the Rights of All: the Ending of Jim Crow in Alaska,” a documentary about the work of Alaska Natives to end discrimination.
You can learn more about Elizabeth Peratrovich and the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945 by reading Michael Hawfield’s article. And here’s a link to the film. We give it a 2-thumbs up rating and hope you’ll be able to find it and view it. We’re curious to find out how many of our students have heard of this important Alaskan Native and of Alaska’s Civil Rights Day, which was created in 1988.
Our parting shot/thought for the week:
[…] a recent post, Elizabeth’s Day, they talk about Elizabeth Peratrovich the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945, Alaska’s Civil Rights […]

Thanks for sharing this. My inquiry-based learning class was interested to read it, and it will be specifically useful for the equity in education group there.
You’ll see that I wrote about this on my blog, and also, I think you’ll be interested to see tomorrow’s post, which mentions you both.
