Big Iditarod Finish

Last week, musher John Baker from Kotzebue won the Iditarod. He won in record time and is the first Inupiaq to win the race. The kids in Bonnie’s class raced against all the mushers; one book read equaled one mile on the trail. The book readers reached Nome before John, reading 1049 books!

Tracking the lead musher and our class on the map.

Making model sleds and mushers

Making all the mandatory items required in the official Iditarod

Dog puppet and postmarked envelopes

The kids mushed miles and miles around the classroom.

Dog teams raced up and down the hallways

You could hear singing coming from the classroom (and they got a lot better than this…)

On a sad note, we lost an avid blog reader (and commenter), long-time Alaskan friend, and friend to Alaska this past week. We will miss him

  1. Hi, What a neat idea!! Congratulations to your class!! What an interesting project and very good incentive to promote reading!! You are doing a great job! I loved the kids creative art work, too! Can you believe it is spring already?!!Our snow is melting but we are to get a snow storm this week. At least it won’t last very long this time of year.
Do you have much daylight these days? Love from us, Doreen and Carl

  2. Greetings from Florida!
The kids are so lucky to have you as a teacher! What a wonderful way to get kids reading and READING…1,049 books. Wow! Cute song, too!

    Love,
